    MINIMIZING FARM-TO-MILL COTTON CLEANING COST

    Get PDF
This study focuses on least-cost farm-to-mill cotton cleaning configurations employing survey, regression, and simulation techniques. The resulting least-cost cotton cleaning configurations, employing standard textile technology, included the use of one lint cleaning in the ginning stage. The use of a field cleaner in the harvesting stage was also found to be optimal with some variation based on the desired yarn quality. Results of the study indicated that the optimal cleaning configurations were distinctly different from currently used practices, such that appropriate changes could save the cotton industry between 0.30and0.30 and 0.60 per bale of cotton, depending on the desired yarn quality.Cotton cleaning, Least-cost configuration, Yarn quality, Crop Production/Industries,

A Universal Two--Bit Gate for Quantum Computation

    Get PDF
We prove the existence of a class of two--input, two--output gates any one of which is universal for quantum computation. This is done by explicitly constructing the three--bit gate introduced by Deutsch [Proc.~R.~Soc.~London.~A {\bf 425}, 73 (1989)] as a network consisting of replicas of a single two--bit gate.Comment: 3 pages, RevTeX, two figures in a uuencoded fil

Quantum computers can search arbitrarily large databases by a single query

This paper shows that a quantum mechanical algorithm that can query information relating to multiple items of the database, can search a database in a single query (a query is defined as any question to the database to which the database has to return a (YES/NO) answer). A classical algorithm will be limited to the information theoretic bound of at least O(log N) queries (which it would achieve by using a binary search).Comment: Several enhancements to the original pape

Deduced Primary Structure of the β Subunit of Brain Type II Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent Protein Kinase Determined by Molecular Cloning

    Get PDF
cDNA clones coding for the β subunit of rat brain type II Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase were isolated and sequenced. The clones, including one containing the entire coding region, hybridize at high stringency to a single band of poly(A)+ RNA of length 4.8 kilobases. The subunit coded for by the clones was identified by in vitro transcription of the cDNA followed by translation of the resulting RNA. The DNA sequence of the clones contains a single long open reading frame (1626 nucleotides) coding for a protein of 542 amino acids with a molecular weight of 60,333, the amino-terminal half of which is homologous to several other protein kinases. Potential ATP- and calmodulin-binding domains were identified. Two independent clones contain an identical 45-nucleotide deletion, relative to the clones described above, resulting in a shorter open reading frame coding for a protein of molecular weight 58,000. This suggests that the minor, 58-kDa β' subunit of the type II Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase may be synthesized on a separate message

When only two thirds of the entanglement can be distilled

We provide an example of distillable bipartite mixed state such that, even in the asymptotic limit, more pure-state entanglement is required to create it than can be distilled from it. Thus, we show that the irreversibility in the processes of formation and distillation of bipartite states, recently proved in [G. Vidal, J.I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, (2001) 5803-5806], is not limited to bound-entangled states.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 1 figur

The static and fatigue behavior of transverse filament tape (TFT) fiberglass/epoxy and TFT/polyester composites was established by the testing of specimens cut from panels fabricated by a filament winding process used for the construction of large experimental wind turbine blades

Effects of interior aircraft noise on speech intelligibility and annoyance

    Get PDF
Recordings of the aircraft ambiance from ten different types of aircraft were used in conjunction with four distinct speech interference tests as stimuli to determine the effects of interior aircraft background levels and speech intelligibility on perceived annoyance in 36 subjects. Both speech intelligibility and background level significantly affected judged annoyance. However, the interaction between the two variables showed that above an 85 db background level the speech intelligibility results had a minimal effect on annoyance ratings. Below this level, people rated the background as less annoying if there was adequate speech intelligibility
